Meaningful Thoughts 0133 - Don't Hope, Friend... Decide!

While waiting to pick up a friend at the airport in Portland, Oregon, I had one of those life-changing experiences that occur unexpectedly. This one occurred a mere two feet away from me.
While I was trying to locate my friend among the passengers deplaning through the jet way, I noticed a man coming toward me carrying two light bags. He stopped right next to me to greet his family.
First he motioned to his youngest son (maybe six years old) as he laid down his bags. They gave each other a long, loving hug. As they separated enough to look in each other’s face, I heard the father say, “It’s so good to see you, son. I missed you so much!” His son smiled somewhat shyly, averted his eyes and replied softly, “Me, too, Dad!”
Then the man stood up, gazed in the eyes of his oldest son (maybe nine or ten) and while cupping his son’s face in his hands said, “You’re already quite the young man. I love you very much !” They too hugged a most loving, tender hug.
While this was happening, a baby girl (perhaps one or one-and-a-half) was squirming excitedly in her mother’s arms, never once taking her little eyes off the wonderful sight of her returning father. The man said, “Hi, baby girl!” as he gently took the child from her mother. He quickly kissed her face all over and then held her close to his chest while rocking her from side to side. The little girl instantly relaxed and simply laid her head on his shoulder, motionless in pure contentment.
After several moments, he handed his daughter to his oldest son and declared, “I’ve saved the best for last!” and proceeded to give his wife the  most passionate kiss I ever remember seeing. He gazed into her eyes for several seconds and then silently mouthed. “I love you so much!” They stared at each other’s eyes, beaming big smiles at one another, while holding both hands.
For an instant they reminded me of newlyweds, but I knew by the age of their kids that they couldn’t possibly be. I puzzled about it for a moment then realized how totally engrossed I was in the wonderful display of unconditional love not more than an arm’s length away from me. I suddenly felt uncomfortable, as if I was invading something sacred, but was amazed to hear my own voice nervously ask, “  How long have you two been married?
“Been together fourteen years total, married twelve of those.” he replied, without breaking his gaze from his lovely wife’s face. “Well then, how long have you been away?” I asked. The man finally turned and looked at me, still beaming his joyous smile. “Two whole days!”
Two days? I was stunned. By the intensity of the greeting, I had assumed he’d been gone for at least several weeks – if not months. I know my expression betrayed me.
I said almost offhandedly, hoping to end my intrusion with some semblance of grace , “I hope my marriage is still that passionate after twelve years!”
The man suddenly stopped smiling.
He looked me straight in the eye, and with forcefulness that burned right into my soul, he told me something that left me a different person. He told me, “Don’t hope, friend… decide!” Then he flashed me his wonderful smile again, shook my hand and said, “God bless!”

Meaningful Thoughts 0132 - Peace of Mind

Once Buddha was walking from town to town with his followers. This was in the initial days. They happened to pass a lake and Buddha told one of his disciples, “I am thirsty. Get  me some water from that lake.”
The disciple walked up to the lake and noticed that some people were washing clothes in the water and he also saw a bullock cart crossing through the lake.  As a result, the water became very muddy, very turbid. The disciple returned to tell Buddha  “The water in there is very muddy. I don’t think it is fit to drink.”
After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back to the lake and get him the water to drink. The disciple obediently went back to the lake. This time he found that the lake had absolutely clear water in it. The mud had settled down and the water above it looked fit to be had. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to Buddha.
Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the disciple and said, “See what you did to make the water clean. You let it be and the mud settled down on its own  and you got clear water. Your mind is also like that. When it is disturbed, just let it be. Give it a little time. It will settle down on its own. You don’t have to put in any effort to calm it down. It will happen effortlessly.”
Buddha says having ‘peace of mind is an effortless process. When there is peace inside you, that peace permeates to the outside. It spreads around you and in the environment.

Meaningful Thoughts 0131 - Sending Yourself Sunshine

When things go wrong, it is easy to get into a bad mood and that bad mood has a way of affecting our life for days to come. In the same way, when we feel badly about ourselves, we tend to act in ways that can negatively influence the next several days. While it is important  to allow ourselves to feel what we feel, we do not have to completely surrender to a dark mood or feelings: the more we simply allow and accept our darkness as one part of the picture, the more easily we can also allow and accept our light. We can temper our grey moods with an injection of sunshine sending good wishes to ourselves for the next 24 hours.

If you feel a bad mood coming or have negative feelings, take a moment to acknowledge that, and recognize that things can and will change, and that you can still have a good day, or a good week... This is a great way to support yourself when you are working through tough times and hard feelings. When you visualize good things for yourself, you are sending yourself love and warmth, as well as encouraging yourself to keep going.

Before you even get out of bed in the morning, you can take the time to send good wishes to yourself all the way through to the next morning. Take the time to fill in the details—where you are going, who you will see, what you will do—and send love and good wishes ahead to yourself, as well as everyone you encounter. It will be like arriving in a new place and finding that an old friend has sent a bouquet of flowers from back home to welcome you and remind you that you are loved.....

Meaningful Thoughts 0130 - Buddha Quote

  • “Hatred does not cease through hatred at any time. Hatred ceases through love. This is an unalterable law.”
  • “To understand everything is to forgive everything.”
  • “You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger.”
  • “When one has the feeling of dislike for evil, when one feels tranquil, one finds pleasure in listening to good teachings; when one has these feelings and appreciates them, one is free of fear.”
  • “All things appear and disappear because of the concurrence of causes and conditions. Nothing ever exists entirely alone; everything is in relation to everything else.”
  • “All wrong-doing arises because of mind. If mind is transformed can wrong-doing remain?”
  • “An insincere and evil friend is more to be feared than a wild beast; a wild beast may wound your body, but an evil friend will wound your mind.”
  • “Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.”
  • “He is able who thinks he is able.”
  • “It is a man’s own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways.”
  • “To conquer oneself is a greater task than conquering others.”

  • “A dog is not considered a good dog because he is a good barker. A man is not considered a good man because he is a good talker.”
  • “The tongue like a sharp knife … Kills without drawing blood.”
  • “There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth; not going all the way, and not starting.”
  • “Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.”
The tendency of our childish nature is to take small things too seriously and get easily offended, whereas when we are confronted with situations which have long-term consequences, we tend to take things less seriously

Meaningful Thoughts 0129 - Root of Heartache

Root of Heartache

“Expectation is the root of all heartache.” ~ William Shakespeare
I have illustrated how to remove pain that is caused by expectation. The following is an excerpt from the book “Wisdom on How to Live Life”.
Tom: Is there any other thing that can cause us pain?
Guru: Expectation.
Tom: What do you mean?
Guru: When we take up a body, life actually promises us nothing.
Tom: What do you mean?
Guru: As an example, when we took up a body, life never promised us how long it would last.
Tom: It didn’t?
Guru: So it may last for 25 years.
Tom: Then?
Guru: We may feel disappointed.
Tom: You mean we shouldn’t feel disappointed?
Guru: Life will last as long as it’ll last. So why should we feel disappointed?
Tom: So why do we feel disappointed?
Guru: Because we’ve been taught to expect life to last around 75 years and when it doesn’t, we feel disappointed.
Tom: Life is short.
Guru: But if we don’t have expectation, then there is no disappointment.
Tom: So disappointment is caused by expectation, and not by actual happening.
Guru: Right, disappointment comes when we compare a happening with some reference point.
Tom: Remove the reference point, then there is no disappointment.
Guru: Exactly, without expectation, we’ll just observe whatever happens is whatever happens.

Meaningful Thoughts 0128 - Temper Control

Temper Control

il_430xN.11205336
Once upon a time there was a little boy who was talented, creative, handsome, and extremely bright. A natural leader. The kind of person everyone would normally have wanted on their team or project. But he was also self-centered and had a very bad temper. When he got angry, he usually said, and often did, some very hurtful things. In fact, he seemed to have little regard for those around him. Even friends. So, naturally, he had few. “But,” he told himself, “that just showshow stupid most people are!”
As he grew, his parents became concerned about this personality flaw, and pondered long and hard about what they should do. Finally, the father had an idea. And he struck a bargain with his son. He gave him a bag of nails, and a BIG hammer. “Whenever you lose your temper,” he told the boy, “I want you to really let it out. Just take a nail and drive it into the oak boards of that old fence out back. Hit that nail as hard as you can!”
Of course, those weathered oak boards in that old fence were almost as tough as iron, and the hammer was mighty heavy, so it wasn’t nearly as easy as it first sounded. Nevertheless, by the end of the first day, the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence (That was one angry young man!). Gradually, over a period of weeks, the number dwindled down.Holding his temper proved to be easier than driving nails into the fence! Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He felt mighty proud as he told his parents about that accomplishment.
“As a sign of your success,” his father responded, “you get to PULL OUT one nail. In fact, you can do that each day that you don’t lose your temper even once.”
Well, many weeks passed. Finally one day the young boy was able to report proudly that all the nails were gone.
At that point, the father asked his son to walk out back with him and take one more good look at the fence. “You have done well, my son,” he said. “But I want you to notice the holes that are left. No matter what happens from now on, this fence will never be the same. Saying or doing hurtful things in anger produces the same kind of result. There will always be a scar. It won’t matter how many times you say you’re sorry, or how many years pass, the scar will still be there. And a verbal wound is as bad as a physical one. People are much more valuable than an old fence. They make us smile. They help us succeed. Some will even become friends who share our joys, and support us through bad times. And, if they trust us, they will also open their hearts to us. That means we need to treat everyone with love and respect. We need to prevent as many of those scars as we can.”
A most valuable lesson, don’t you think? And a reminder most of us need from time to time. Everyone gets angry occasionally. The real test is what we DO with it.
If we are wise, we will spend our time building bridges rather than barriers in our relationships.
